My campus is freaking out about the impending arrival of Santa Cruzian’s favorite holiday where they get to smoke pot open and free in the huge meadow surrounding the campus with hundreds of others. Here is the memo we got on it today: UCSC is committed to providing a safe, healthy living and learning environment in which you can thrive while earning a world class education. To that end, I write regarding a non-University sanctioned event often referred to as “Four-Twenty” or “4/20.” This unsanctioned, unwelcome and illegal activity diminishes UCSC’s reputation and draws negative attention to the campus. Additionally, this event creates multiple challenges for the campus and creates unacceptable risks to safety. Your safety is paramount, as is the need to continue campus operations that support learning. Therefore, the following measures will be in place: -No guests allowed -You must show your student ID to be on campus -We are limiting bus routes -You cannot drive on or off of the campus between the hours of 3pm and 11pm ….etc…. I guess I’m stuck on campus until 11pm since I teach 2-4:40. I already had several students ask if we get that day off or if they could “leave at 4:18 to celebrate”. BIZARRO WORLD.
